The world needs a new Energy Strategy

To identify the best ways to make Switzerland and the world less dependent on hydro-carbons, the Swiss National Fonds (SNF) funded $45M of research into Energy Generation & Storage, Network Upgrades and Enviromental factors. In years past, these results were publish in book form, limiting their spread to a group of academics. To make this information more accessible and searchable by anyone we designed a new website and visualized hundreds of research results to make it easy to learn and share the information with anyone.

As a big data nerd interested in sustainability and economics I greatly enjoyed getting to study all of these topics in detail to ensure a correct representation and make it easier for people to glean and share these important insights.

The power of visualization comes with responsibility

I have gathered several years of experience in making big data sets easy to read, even at a glance. Visualizations can be very powerful by reducing time needed to analyze the data and making it more accessible. In turn it can also frame information in a biased perspective leading to erroneous ‘insights’ . This also means that there is a big responsibility to get it right and it is vital to have a very good understanding of how people work and why.

I take this challenge very serious, but also enjoy amplifying people to learn and form memories thanks to the help of my visualisations.
